10 Ways to Take Me Time: Fashion Friday

It’s back to school time and all over the country moms are cheering, or trying to hide their puddle of tears. However you are reacting to your kids going back to school, after summer vacation and all that back to school stress (the forms, the clothes, the school supplies) it’s a great time to take a little break for yourself.

It may seem silly since you have a laundry pile the size of My. Kilimanjaro, or a stack of work to the ceiling, but taking some much needed ‘me’ time and celebrating (or crying) about the passage of time is key to keeping sane especially once the homework and after school activities start piling up. If you can do it with girlfriends (and a mimosa) even better.

Here are 10 ways to get some ‘me’ time while updating your look or wardrobe

  1. Get a haircut. If you’re like me you spend the summer ignoring your hair, and by Fall it’s looking not so hot. Take some time to get a haircut ALONE with no little people running around. Make sure you get a scalp massage with your shampoo.
  2. Try a new hairdo. Do you usually where a ponytail or straighten your hair? Take extra time after the bus has pulled off with your kiddos to do something different to your hair. 10 minutes or so and you could have a gorgeous new way to do you hair. I was inspired  a video I found of a messy side braid, and spent 15 minutes on it yesterday. It definitely made me feel more put together, and it was fun!
  3. Blow Out: Even if it’s just for school pickup, getting a blowout (shampoo, dry and style) of your hair can make you feel like a million bucks without spending a small fortune.
  4. Get a pedicure. There’s nothing like having to sit still for 20 minutes while soaking your feet, and letting someone else pamper you. Look for deals on Groupon, LivingSocial, or just find a cheap local place for an occasional treat.
  5. Make a list of your clothing needs and wants. I always shop with a list so that sparkly bangle doesn’t distract me from the white cardigan I’ve ben hunting for. It also keeps me from buying yet another pair of the same pants, or another black shirt.
  6. Go sale shopping. I don’t know about you but the idea of dragging the kids through the sale racks, or digging through all the fab finds at places like Marshall’s is my idea of torture. Instead if I need to shop for a new outfit, I pack up my list and head out blissfully alone for 30 minutes of peaceful shopping. Trying on clothes is so much easier when you don’t have little people trying to climb under fitting room doors. I usually spend LESS than I would with the kids in tow simply because I can really focus on digging through the sale racks.
  7. Exercise. It’s good for your body, your mind, and may even help you fit into those skinny jeans that have been sitting in the back of your closet.
  8. Work on your lookbook. I have talked about creating a lookbook before, so take 10-15 minutes to pair the outfit you’re wearing with different shoes or  accessories and take photos of the ones you love.
  9. Purge your closet. Spend 10 minutes purging stuff that’s ripped, doesn’t look good, or that top you thought looked gorgeous until you saw it in a photo. Bonus! Clothing you donate is also tax-deductible. (and it also makes room for better things in your closet ;))
  10. Try a new makeup look. We all have our standard color palette or our 5 minute morning routine. Spend a few minutes trying out a new look-maybe one for date night, or  something fun and fresh.
Have you taken any ‘me’ time lately? If so what did you do?

Love this! I finally had some me time today and went to Ross. I bought several things for the house and some seasonal decorations which was a lot of fun. Then I sat at Barnes & Noble for 30 min with a latte. So relaxing!
