honey: Made in China??

in food

After reading this eye-opening article from the Consumerist I am convinced more than ever that eating local is the way to go. It’s difficult for me to believe that companies would have a product shipped all the way from China just to save a few bucks. It’s not worth my health, thank you very much giant honey suppliers.

I much prefer the local, raw honey that I can find practically in my backyard. We have lots of options for local honey. Exton Bee Company, which is only a few minutes down the road, is a great little local supplier. We have 3 farmer’s markets where various local honey is sold. 2 locations of a locally owned and run health food store, Kimberton Whole Foods, that sell my favorite Walt’s Swarmbustin’ Raw Honey. As well as being a 30 minute drive from Lancaster were Amish farmers sell their goods.

I’d like to keep bees myself, but we have a lot of work to do in the yard before we’re ready for bees, including making an area that’s designated for bees only. (no kids allowed!)
