I can still remember the first time I heard Sarah McLachlan’s voice. I was amazed, and in awe of her talent. Something about her music really spoke to me, and as anyone who lived on my floor freshman year of college will tell you I played her CD over and over and over again. They may also mention a weird noise that accompanied her music, which I called singing, and was later told by one not so nice floormate sounded like I was a dying.
Since my hopes of being a singer were dashed, I stopped singing, but I’m glad to see that Sarah is back after taking time off to raise her two daughters. She’s even bringing them on tour this summer as she resurrects the iconic Lilith Fair. Which during its’ run from 1997 through 1999 became one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world, with over 2 million fans in attendance and raising over $10 million dollars for national and local women’s charities. Click here for tour dates, and tickets. I was excited to see the lineup includes singers such as Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, The Indigo Girls, and of course Sarah herself.
Sarah’s new album, Laws of Illusion, is her first album in seven years. It includes 12 new songs, most of which deal with her divorce from her husband, though several are about love in the good times.
The first single, Loving you is Easy, is by far my favorite song on the CD. Its’ beautiful words sung with Sarah’s familiar (and amazing) voice make it a lovely tribute to love. You can view the video below:
Most of the album deals with love in turmoil, divorce, and the pain that comes when love doesn’t work out. For me, it felt very atypical of Sarah’s songs, and for someone who isn’t going through those same emotions I found many of the songs to be quite sad, and depressing.
I think they would be wonderful to listen to if you were dealing with a love lost, or on a rainy day, but I’m not certain I will listen to them frequently. There are several that I loved though including “Bring on the Wonder” and “Rivers of Love”.
That’s just my opinion though, and I want to give you the chance to hear Sarah’s songs and decide for yourself.
