Mom Monday: Back to School

in Mom Monday

It’s almost time for back to school. For many parents that means a time for tears. They might be tears of joy, or maybe tears of relief after a very long summer. for our family it means big changes. For the first time since I’ve been a mother I will have all 4 kids in school at the same time.

For those of you doing the math, that’s nearly 13 years.

Here’s how things are changing in our house:

Nathan, 12 (pretending 13 isn’t the next number for the next few months) was homeschooled from 3rd-6th grades. This year he will be attending 7th grade at our local public school. I’m sure it will be a huge adjustment for us all. I’ll miss having him home, but I also know he needed more than I was able to provide him while I was running around with the other kids, doing errands, and squeezing in work time.

Emma, our 8 1/2 year old will be moving up to 3rd grade, a tough year from everything other parents have told me. I’m sure it will be tough-since she’s not a fan of the h word. (homework)

Audrey, our 6 1/2 year old continues to maintain her innocence as evidenced by her excitement over moving to full day school for 1st grade, and her enthusiasm about having homework to do. Or it could be that she’s even more my mini-me than I realized, since I loved school. (Seriously I did, and you can guess how popular that made me!)

Aidan, who is 4 1/2 will be attending a local Montessori preschool that we adore. He will be there every afternoon for a few hours, and once lunch bunch starts, he’ll be attending that a few days a week.

I’m sure that my emotions will run the gamut once the day officially comes next Monday, but I’m really ready for this phase of our lives. I like that there is no juggling naptime and school events, no nursing in the middle of recitals, and no more diapers!

Although I have to say one of the BEST things about back to school is buying school supplies. If you haven’t picked yours up yet consider picking up extras for your school, or your child’s classroom.

Be sure to stay tuned to Fill the Backpack to keep up with all the awesome giveaways we will be giving away, and if enter to win a $500 dream classroom for yourself or a teacher you know!

How do you feel about back to school time?

Aw! Such a special time of year! The bus isn’t so bad, it’s simply a place to learn all the things you shouldn’t be doing and saying.

Thanks-to you too! I’m glad I have another friend on the same path this year-we’ll have to share updates.

Ha! I wish. I’m just a regular mom with a few extra kids. ;) They actually help each other out a lot. After the 2nd one I didn’t have to potty train anyone. :)

College? I don’t want to think about that! I’d be tearing up I’m sure.

That’s wonderful that they have such appreciation. I wish all kids did!

Amy, I wish all that were true. Thanks. I think I must appear to be smiling so much since I do in my avatar. In reality….not so much. ;)

It’s a special place you’re in! I loved having that alone time with my younger kids as the older ones went off on their own. It’s like starting having one for a little while again.

Ok, I need your secrets please. How do you do all this, stay so young (seriously, you can’t be much older than your son) and always have a smile on your face?

Now, how I do I feel about back to school? Excited for my son’s new adventures. Sentimental about him getting to be such a big boy. Grateful that my younger son is still home and has so much to learn before I send him out into the world as well.

Here’s to a great year for everyone!

YAY! I understand.. I’ve got an 18 year old in college (first year) and my 2nd youngest is going into preschool!

It’s a crazy time of year, but I know that it doesn’t matter their age, even the high schoolers were excited with new backpacks, new school supplies and wardrobe. Being a single mom for most of their lives has grown their appreciation for those times when they get new school supplies!

    Have a great new year!!

Reading your blog post made me tired. You are super-mom! ;-)

Just dropped off my two boys at their new schools for the first time. The little one hollered and cried until I got him settled with a puzzle. The older one couldn’t have been happier in his new Kindergarten class. My only trepidation is when it comes to him riding the bus home, but I’m sure he’ll be just fine :)
