I’m leaving for a trip on Saturday and while I have yet to pack, that isn’t stopping me from sharing great pieces that make traveling easy when I’m on the go. I like to keep it simple to avoid what to wearitis, and keep my baggage costs down.
10 Budget friendly Travel Essentials
Jeggings
A must for me anywhere now. They are easy to throw on and so comfy to wear. I prefer to wear them with a long top to cover up my ‘problem’ areas. These Gap jeggings are a steal at $23.99.
Flats
Flats are a must for me when I travel. The are easy to slip on and off for security lines, cover my toes, and if I’ll be sitting for long periods I can slip them off and throw on some fuzzy socks (a must for someone with cold feet like me). I don’t skimp on shoes, but can often find great bargains due to my extra large feet. I picked up flats similar to these (but not so shiny-more of a muted gold) they were originally $90, but I scored them for $14.99 from Banana Republic.
Tanks
As always tanks are a staple for my wardrobe. Whether it’s chilly or hot I wear them alone, layer them, and wear them under shirts for extra coverage. I buy tanks from J Crew, Eddie Bauer, and occasionally Old Navy. With sales or discounts you can usually score tanks for $5-10.
Cardigans
I may have a slight obsession with cardigans and sweaters I can put over any clothes. I love that I can add another layer of warmth, cover up something that feels too skimpy, and of course like the way they can add drama to an otherwise boring outfit. This one from Gap retails for just under $30, but in store I often find deals that are under $15!
Dresses
No matter the length of the trip (or weather) I always pack at least one dress that can be dressed up or down. For summertime a maxi dress is a great option since they are comfy and casual but you can dress it up a bit with a statement piece of jewelry and some wedges. This J Crew dress is $88, but keep an eye on it as I’m sure it will be marked down soon.
Comfy pjs with coverage
When traveling, especially to blogging conferences I like to have pjs that are comfy but more like loungewear so I can hang with roommates or even have breakfast without having to worry about an in between outfit. For me a top with bra support is a must. Target carries a great line of comfy loungewear type pajamas from Gilligan & O’Malley. Most pieces run between $10-20, but often they go on sale for $5-7.
Color & Prints
While many of us stick to basics, make sure to have some pieces with a pop of color, or a fabulous print to add some fun to your clothes. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a fun piece though. Look for fun and trendy prints and colors at stores like Old Navy and Target where you can shop for under $20.
Scarf
I always pack a large scarf since it can act as a wrap and add some flavor to my outfits without having to rely on jewelry. I look for scarves on sale and usually score them for $5-10 a great value for their versatile use. Here’s a fun striped one from Target for $12.99
Cheap Jewelry
Why travel with the expensive stuff when you score great pieces for under $30 from chain stores like Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Target? Search Etsy for great handmade pieces that are unique and affordable. If you’re crafty you could even make your own!
I typically pack a handful of necklaces, and some basic bangles. That way I’m not worried about losing them or anything being taken.
A giant handbag
I have a giant bag from Banana Republic I carry with me, or I use a white bag I picked up from Target for $40. They are both huge which makes them great carry-on/purses since I can fill them with my computer, iPad, purse kit, and so much more. This one is similar (mine is Kelly green). Since BR often runs storewide sales you may be able to score this bag for 30-40% off if you’re patient.
