Welcome Candice (from Fashionably Organized) who will be sharing her crafty side with us over the next few months as a member of Lowe’s Creator and Influencer Network. Every month she will share a new project inspired by Lowe’s Creative Ideas a free magazine that features step by step ideas for DIY and craft projects.
When I was little I loved Halloween decorations. There was the spooky house, the one house that was so spooky I wasn’t brave enough to even walk by! One house always had the coolest Jack’o'lanterns I’d ever seen!
My mom wasn’t much of a holiday decorator, the only decorations were our carved pumpkins that we made each year before going trick or treating. Halloween seemed like such a fun time to decorate, so I was always a bit disappointed we didn’t do more. Even then I loved being crafty and dreaming up decorating ideas!
Now that I have my home I love to decorate. Halloween is still one of my favorites since it’s so whimsical and fun. Making our own decorations is a fun and frugal way to create things we’ll use for years to come, and making them with the kids makes it a fun family project.
With the help of my Lowe’s gift card and some inspiration, I made two fun Halloween projects to decorate the house.
Halloween Tablecloth
I made a table cloth that will be a great Halloween decoration for years to come. It was so easy and quick to do! Using a canvas drop cloth also gives a rustic feel, perfect during this time of year. The best part of this project is that I was able to have the kids join me in making this table cloth because there was no way to really mess it up! They loved helping out.
Supplies For Halloween Tablecloth:
- canvas drop cloth – I used the Trimaco 6’ x 9’ drop cloth
- paint – I used Olympic flat paint in Pumpkin and Black Magic – you can use spray paint if you would like
- letter stencils
- foam brush – I used Worktooks International 2” Foam Brush
- any kind of Halloween stencils
How To Make Halloween Tablecloth:
- Cut out all of the stencils you will be using, if you are printing them from your computer I recommend using card stock, it will hold up to the paint better than plain paper.
- Dip the foam in the paint, wipe the excess off, and stipple the paint in the stencil you choose.
- Continue doing this all over the drop cloth.
- Once you are done painting let the cloth dry for at least 4 hours and then you’re ready to decorate your table with your new rustic feeling table cloth.
Halloween Silhouettes
I recently found an article on how to make silhouettes of children. I was inspired to make my own silhouettes with a spooky spin. The Halloween silhouettes make whimsical faux portraits on our walls.
Supplies for Halloween Silhouettes:
- 2 pieces of 2’ x 2’ x ¼ plywood
- paint primer – I used the Valspar
- paint – I used the same paints from the tablecloth
- paint roller
- painter’s tape
- stencils – I printed mine off of the internet from free stencils
- picture hangars – I used this easy to use self leveling hangar
- newspaper
- optional: hanging hooks – I use Command hooks, but you can easily use a nail
- Prime each piece of wood. Many primers you only have to wait 30 mins to dry.
- Paint the boards with the desired color you want on the bottom. Depending on the color and coverage you may have to do 2 coats.
- Tape the chosen stencil on the wood.
- Use the roller to paint the silhouette you chose. Hint: first paint the edges of the stencil in the color you have as the base. This will ensure that the stencil color doesn’t bleed, but has very sharp lines. You’ll have very clear edges this way.
- Remove the stencils and do some touch ups where there is obvious bleeding.
- Adhere the picture hangars to the back of the wood board.
- Hang your silhouettes up!
