Matchbox Holiday Gift Boxes

It’s already December and that means the holidays are very quickly approaching.   Of course after many failed attempts over previous years, this year I’m actually planning on being organized well ahead of time and so far, so good.

One of the little stocking stuffers I purchased for my daughter is a Hello Kitty ring.  She adores Hello Kitty and this tiny ring is sure to bring a smile to her face.  The only problem being that it didn’t come inside a little box.  I didn’t want it to get lost, or forgotten about in the bottom of the stocking, and even worse, somehow lose it before Christmas, so decided to make a little gift box to put it in.

Of course I can never stop at making just one though and ended up making a few of these.

What you need:

  • matchbox
  • scrapbook paper, or wrapping paper – you don’t want thick card stock
  • twine or ribbon (for tying up your little package)
  • Mod Podge and a paint brush
  • scissors

Before you begin, make sure that your little gift is going to fit inside the box.

Now, if you like your packages to match over the holidays, then this craft is perfect.  Either snip off a small strip of wrapping paper (like I did with the striped box), or cut an image out of your wrapping paper like I did with the middle box.  For the top box I traced around a small fondant cutter and cut the star out of the blue paper using my X-ACTO knife and glued that over the top of the red and white striped paper.

Use Mod Podge to adhere your paper to the box.  Trim any edges using sharp scissors.  Set your box aside to dry.  You can also apply a coat of Mod Podge over the top of the paper too to give it a more glossy look.  I don’t recommend doing this though if you are already using paper with glitter on it or that has a shiny surface.

Once my box was dry I placed a small piece of glitter card stock inside the box to sit the shiny ring on.   Alternatively, you can place a little cotton wool, felt, foam, tissue paper, or light quilt batting inside your box.  Just make sure that your gift will still fit in first.

You are all done!

I hope you have a festive and safe holiday season.
