Best Time to Buy Everything

For the past year I have been showing you ways to make the most of your money via our Best Time to Buy series. And if you have been paying attention you probably noticed some shopping trends within the series, some shopping lessons if you will. Here are a few to refresh your memory.

  1. Grocery shop seasonally.  One of the absolute best ways to save money on your grocery bill is to purchase items that are in season. Not only will these items taste better if they are purchased in season, but the prices will ease that grocery bill greatly.
  2. Buy last year’s models when newest models are introduced. When new products arrive in store that always means last year’s models have gone on sale in the months before. If you’re a true gambler the best bargains are always had on last year’s models once the latest and greatest products have arrived.
  3. Shop for holiday items after holidays are over. The day after Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc. are always great shopping days to purchase items directly related to that holiday. For example Halloween candy? It drops greatly in price the day after Halloween, and if you were to plan ahead you could purchase some of the more generically packaged candy, freeze it, and use it for stocking stuffers the following month all at prices up to 80% off of regular retail prices.
  4. Plan and shop up to a year ahead for future projects, vacations, etc.  Ultimately the best way to save money is the plan your life ahead of time, especially if you can plan things up to a year in advance. Home improvement projects, family vacations, and even getting ready for the newest driver in your home can all have their budgets cut dramatically if you carefully plan using our Best Time to Buy lists.

Speaking of the Best Time to Buy Lists, here are a few items that you can find from each list. November is a great time to get some shopping done. You don’t believe me? Check out November’s Best Time to Buy list and tell me I’m wrong.

what to buy in November

Halloween Candy & Goods   Halloween is over! And for the first few days of this month you can find discount bargains on all things Halloween including candy. This would be a great time to buy various chocolates and put them in the freezer for the future stuffing of stockings. At least that is what Santa does.

Home goods Cookware, dinnerware, etc. all start to really go on sale this month. Look for great bargains to make your tables beautiful for the upcoming holidays.

Food Apple, squash, sweet potatoes, and turkey all are at good prices this month. And if you enjoy turkey, now is the time to buy an extra and put it in the freezer as per Bankrate.com turkey prices will rise as much as 30 cents per pound in December.

Toys Neighborhood Toy Store Day is November 10, 2012 this year, and many locally owned retailers in order to celebrate the unique items that can only be found at neighborhood toy stores offer demonstrations and discounts this day. Look for specials in your areas.

Personal Grooming Products  Shavers, massagers, etc. are usually on sale at the beginning of this month. It’s time to stock up on all of your personal grooming needs for the year.

Winter Staples Discounts on hats, scarves, gloves and other items can be found leading up to Black Friday, and often times if you try to wait until the season is over these items might be gone. So if you find a good price this month, jump on it. Though if you like a gamble, the best deals on these products can often be found later in winter.

Furniture Sales of 20-30% off can be found this time of year on furniture at stores such as Walmart, Target, etc. Furniture sales at bigger furniture retailers often happen in January, so if you don’t find what you want this month, you only have to wait another couple of months.

Wedding Dresses  Not that many people get married between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and retailers are more open to negotiations for wedding dresses during this lull in sales. But don’t wait until after Christmas as there are a lot of engagements that happen over the holidays.

Custom Christmas Cards, Photo Books, etc. During this time of year a lot of online retailers offer big bargains on custom cards, photo books, etc. Look for buy one get one 50% off, free shipping, and other great discounts this month regarding theses goods.

September – Best Time to Buy

I really enjoy September. The kids are back in school, we start to have a few hints of fall weather mixed in with the last days of summer coughing out the last of the hight temperature days, and I find myself enjoying getting everything back on schedule and organized. September is also a good month to find a great bargains on everything including, yes, some holiday shopping items. So enjoy September’s Best Time to Buy, and tell me, what will you be buying this month?

What to buy in September

Air Conditioners  So I had a big expense last month. The coil on my air conditioner was rusted out, and with this being one of the best times to buy air conditioners there was a real debate in my house about whether to replace the air conditioner or buy a new one. Another good time to find out about the coil would have been last December when Air Conditioners prices hit their yearly lows. However, that’s not always how it works is it?

School Supplies  For most the kids are back in school, and the school supplies have been bought. If you are a savvy shopper, however, you know that now is another good time to stock up on the school supplies left. And if you are a lover of Target the best bargains can be found in the aisle end caps.

Shrubs, Trees, and Other Plants  Not only is fall the perfect time to buy shrubs and trees from a planting perspective, but it is also a smart purchase from a money perspective. Look for bargains for the next month on shrubs, trees, and other plants.

Wine Per Smart Money early fall is the best time to take advantage of wine discounts from early harvest wines. For more tips on saving up to 30% off of wines check out this article, Buying Wine Online.

Bikes New models of bikes are coming, so take a minute to think about whether or not a bargain on a new bike might be in your future. Maybe for a great holiday gift?

Cars New models are appearing right now, and dealers are looking to clear out their lots on last year’s models. And the best days to buy cars?  Last Tuesday or Wednesday of the month, early afternoons, Monday’s, and rainy days.

Repositioning Cruises  Per Vacations to Go  fall is a great time to find deals on cruise ship travel due to repositioning discounts.

Outdoor Furniture, Grills, and Camping Gear Like last month, sales continue on outdoor furniture, grills, and camping gear to make room from winter stock.

Holiday Airfares Per Kayak’s data last year, the best time to buy Thanksgiving airfares was late September through the beginning of October and the best time to buy your Christmas airfares was December 1st through December 10th. As we all know, however, that every year is different, so I suggest setting up some air watch notifiers and start waiting for those bargain notices to appear in your inbox if you are looking for a bargains on holiday travel this year. A general rule of thumb based upon those who track such information is to start looking at least 2 months before you plan to travel to find the best bargains.

May – Best Time to Buy

May is a big and busy month with Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, graduation day whether it be from high school, college or kindergarten, and for my kids May contains the last day of school before the summer break. It’s a big month. And correspondingly so is this month’s Best Time to Buy list.

What to buy in May

1. Party and Grill Supplies Plan ahead for all of your summer get togethers by getting bargains on disposable plates, cups, napkins, utensils, charcoal, and lighter fluid in May.

2. Patio Furniture As people move outside for barbecue, swimming, and warmer temperatures, new patio furniture is arriving in stores. Check out last year’s models that will be cleared out to make room for the new.

3. Refrigerators  Manufacturers release their new models of refrigerators in the summer, and spring is the time that prices go down on refrigerators so that retailers can make room for the new. Look for great deals on refrigerators at this time and check out Bargain Appliances for more shopping tips to get the best deals.

4. Vacuum Cleaners  Like on April’s Best Time to Buy List vacuum cleaners make the cut as they are on sale to make room for the coming summer’s newly released models.

5. Mattresses and Box Springs  New mattresses arrive in stores in May. Look for bargains on last year’s models, and the best bargains can be had Memorial Day weekend. However, shopping Memorial Day weekend can be hectic, so think about pre-shopping to figure out exactly which mattress you like. Then when Memorial Weekend hits, find your best deal on that particular mattress and avoid making purchasing mistakes being blinded by a bargain’s light.

6. Cookware Sales on cookware corresponds with graduation and wedding season. Retailers offers sales on these very popular gifts.

7. Summer Hand Bags,Totes, and Swimwear August really is the best time to get bargains on swimwear, but if you don’t want to wait until after summer is over and you want a better selection, May is a great time to find a deal on summer hand bags, totes, and swimwear.

8. Athletic Shoes Running shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles, and replacing those expensive running shoes so frequently can really add up. May, however, is a good time to look for bargains as many manufacturers who are sponsoring spring races offer bargains on their shoes at the same time.

9. Food:
It’s the beginning of backyard barbecue season. Find great deals on the following food items.

  • Hotdogs
  • Ground Beef
  • Hamburger and hot dog buns
  • Condiments
  • Salad dressing
  • Chips
  • Ice Cream
  • Popsicles
  • Frozen pies
  • Soda
  • Bottled Water

Everyone who has ever tried to make the most of their money knows that in order to get the best bargains on certain goods, timing is everything. April – Best Time to Buy

What to buy in April1. China & Cookware: Wedding season is about to start and to clear out last year’s cookware to make room for this year’s latest, retailers will be marking everything down.

2. Winter Gear:   The old rule of buying out of season products to get the best bargains on those products applies here. While shopping specifically look for boots, skiis, and snow blowers which are often big ticket items during the height of the winter season.

3. Houses: If you’re looking for a great deal on a home, December through January are still your best months. However, if you are looking for a larger selection of homes spring is your season.

4. Car Accessories and Parts:   Per the Car Care Council April of 2012 is National Car Care Month. Look for promotional car car maintenance products to go on sale this month (especially tires), and enjoy this free customizable service schedule, a schedule and e-mail reminder service, from www.carecare.org.

5. Vacuum Cleaners: Spring has sprung and so has everyone’s urge to get that spring cleaning started. Look for bargains on vacuum cleaners during April as retailers clear out their show rooms for new models that will begin to arrive in June.

6. Laptops: Depending upon the brand April can be a great month to purchase a laptop. Apple’s products are definitely ones to watch as per PC World,

“Apple tends to update its laptop line twice a year: generally there’s a significant change to the line-up in spring (in the March to May timeframe).”

7. Televisions: New models of televisions are released in the spring. Look for bargains from last year’s models.

8. Winter Fabrics: Stores need to make room for the spring inventories, so to do so they mark down all of their winter fabrics.

9. Sneakers: People start heading outdoors more in April, and the sales on sneakers coincides with this trend. November is also a good time to find bargains as the cold weather slows down the sales of these shoes.

10. Furniture: April is a big month for furniture market trade shows. Retailers will be clearing out older styles to make room for the new looks gotten at these trade shows. Especially look for sales on office furniture around tax time.

11. Repositioning Cruises:   There are several times a year, mostly as the season changes, where cruise lines move their ships to the locations that are most popular for that season.   For example cruise lines that have boats in Alaska might move them to the Caribbean in the fall.   Rather than sailing these ships without passengers, cruise lines offer a great discount to their consumers with more time on a cruise to spend relaxing and exploring the ship.   Be careful though!   All that time on the ship may give you an end of the trip statement that is much higher than you anticipated.   .

13. Foods:  To find the best deals on food think about shopping around Easter holiday weekend and post-Easter sales.

  • Kosher foods
  • Easter Clearance Candy
  • Eggs
  • Ham
  • Cheese
  • Mustard
  • Ready-made dough
  • Dinner rolls
  • Frozen pies
  • Cake Mix
  • Cake Frosting
  • Pie Crusts
