Doubletree Hotels, and the Arbor Day Foundation team up to bring you the Explore Trees Inside and Out exhibit at the Please Touch Museum from January 23rd-May 2nd.
I had the pleasure of visiting the exhibit, with my 4 and 5 year old last Friday, 1/22/10. (see disclosure for more info) We had an absolute blast! It was our first time in the “new” space, and it is gorgeous! A big thanks to Sarah of Chester County Moms for telling me about the event!
We got to see Bay from Queen Mother Blog with her adorable daughter, Melissa from GirlyMama with her energetic boy and darling girl, and Tina from Otherhood LLC with her 2 boys. There were other bloggers there as well, but I was so busy exploring and chasing kids, I didn’t have time to introduce myself.
Here’s a great video by my fab friend, Joey Fortman that aired on WPHL in Philly discussing the new exhibit and featuring yours truly, along with my adorable kiddos. Hilariously after the crew and Joey walked away, Audrey said her favorite part of the new exhibit was really drawing pictures. (ah, my little artiste!)
Here are a few of the MANY photos I took:
ABOUT EXPLORE TREES INSIDE AND OUT:
Creating Explore Trees Inside and Out
- Much of the material used in creating the artificial trees was either natural or recycled.
- Materials used to make the trees included natural wood, burlap, natural fiber rope, raffia, 100 percent wool carpet, and recycled rubber.
- LED lighting, which is more energy efficient and lasts longer than typical lights, is used inside the central climbing tree, Giant Leaf and Giant Acorn. Sensors activate the lights only when children are present, allowing for lower energy usage.
- Framework for much of the exhibit is made of steel and/or aluminum, which can be recycled following the exhibit’s traveling schedule. The steel plates in the base of the exhibit can be recycled as well.
- The exhibit is designed so it can be packed into a single semi-truck when it moves on the next location.

Special Programs
In February, visitors can make Stained Glass using household items like wax paper and tissue paper left over from the holidays to create masterpieces.
In March, kids can create ABC Puppet Pals and then perform shows in a puppet theater created from recycled refrigerator boxes.
In April, the Program Room will focus on the concept of creative re-use with projects like Recycled Print Making, Drawings in the Sand, and Window Blocks with Recycled Materials. The tools for creating the prints are made from all recycled materials.
There will also be a special booklet that will be handed out between April 20th-23rd that will share fun ideas on how your family can be more green.
Coming to a museum near you!
The Missouri Botanical Garden is the second of nine children’s museums or science centers across the U.S. that the “Exploring Trees Inside and Out” Traveling Exhibit will visit over the next three years. The exhibit will remain for up to three months at each location.
Disclosure: I received free admission, parking, and carousel coupons while attending an event to introduce the exhibit to the local press.
