I think they are best for someone you know really well. It's more like a gift of "We'll go out to dinner together," and you would cover the rest of the cost. You could always add a gift certificate to the restaurant as well. For instance if I was going to give a $50 gift certificate I might do that and then add the gift certificates as well.
