Welcome! Thanks for stopping by the Carnival of Personal Finance! Want more Centsible Life? Stop by my about page , sign up for FREE email updates, or sign up for my FREE RSS feed. Or you can follow me on twitter. Thanks for stopping by!

With Halloween just passed, and the amount of candy in our house dwindling, I thought it would be a perfect time to talk candy. Admittedly I have quite the sweet tooth. My mom would often find me hiding in out pantry eating something I shouldn’t be. I’m still the same way. Just ask my kids, who wonder where the latest treats have disappeared to. With the exception of the kid’s bags, I sent all the candy with my husband to work. So since I can’t snack on candy, I’ll talk about it instead. Tell me what your favorite sweet is in the comments! If you don’t feel like reading through all my musings, feel free to scroll to the bottom where I have an index of posts. (credit to Fabulously Broke for the idea)

Who’s next to host the Carnival? The Canadian Finance Blog

Editor’s Choice/Eclat chocolate

It’s hard to choose a favorite sweet, but these chocolates are amazing. It’s a rare treat, but so, so delicious. They are light, full of flavor, and make you want more. Just like my editor’s choices are deep articles, full of good stuff, and leave you wanting to come back and read the site again.

Payday (Career)

Be Your Own Part-Time Boss: The Pros & Cons: Baker from Man Vs. Debt shares this excellent guest post on the pros and cons of being your own boss. It’s realistic, not just about how awesome it can be.

Top 15 College Degrees by Starting Salary in 2009: My Life ROI shares the top 15 starting salaries in 2009. Unsurprisingly  most are technical degrees.

A Great Way to Get a Degree Without Paying For It: Free Money Finance shares how to get a college or advanced degree without paying for it. The real question though is it worth sacrificing other aspects of your life to obtain a degree?

Grace is Amazing, but Please Don’t Bring it To Work: Craig Ford discusses whether your faith should be a part of the workplace. I’m not sure the title suits his conclusion, but it’s a very interesting discussion whatever your faith.

Get paid to take online surveys: Ray discusses various paid survey sites that will pay you for a few minutes of your time. You won’t become a millionaire but it can create a nice side income. I also like YouData which pays you to view ads targeted at you. I’ve earned just under $10, but it literally takes 15 seconds.

Zero Bar/Credit

The zero bar is my choice for this section because it’s both delicious, and a 0 where we all want our credit card balances to be at the end of the month.

Noka Candy/Debt

noka.jpg

The world’s most expensive candy, costing $2,600/lb. Anyone who buys it is either a multimillionaire who uses $100 bills as toilet paper, or someone who is deeply concerned with appearances, and likely to have a boatload of debt.

None/Economy

Why did I choose nothing for the economy? I couldn’t come up with one! Leave me a suggestion in the comments, and I’ll add something in. Will it be your least favorite candy? The most wasteful candy? Or nerds?

Chocolate Coins/Finance
3179649692_e872204b39

The cornerstone of finance, money! What represents that better than gold chocolate coins?
  • 5 Practical Ways Anybody can Become a Millionaire: 5 ways you can become a millionaire. These steps are very simple, but will make a big impact.
  • The Cost of Being a Dude: J. Money as always presents a fun and funny read about the cost difference in personal care products from men to women. There are so many things he didn’t touch on though, like haircuts that are 3 times as expensive.
  • What To Do With Equity From Sale of House Joe talks about how to use your home equity when you sell your house. When we moved, we used ours for the downpayment, and some for necessary repairs. I wish now I had put it all and then some into the downpayment.

Penny Candy/Frugality

I don’t know if it still exists anywhere, but in the heyday of my youth penny candy was found at our local convenience store. It was an easy way to some of your hard earned allowance, and still have a few bucks left for a movie. (for the record I’m only 33!)

$100 Grand/Investing

1337

Why $100 Grand? It’s a nice number to see in your account, if you are under 30 and have $100K in the bank, your chances of meeting your retirement goals are very high.

Smarties coins/Money Management

You are a smartie if you manage your money! Read these posts to find out ideas and tips for managing your money better.

Gingerbread House/Real Estate

2464324258_6173f6dfa4

What is more apt than a house made of candy for the real estate section? Most homes have fallen so far in value that a gingerbread house might be a better investment than a real one!

Candy Buy Back/Saving

Have you ever heard of a candy buy back? It’s the newest trend among dentists and parents who don’t want their kids bouncing off the walls.

  • Top Online Savings Accounts For Savvy Savers: The Smarter Wallet offers the best savings accounts for short and long term savings.
  • Simplicity Leads to Wealth: Don shares,  ”Simplifying your life can cut your expenses and lead to wealth building.” I completely agree. We’re hosting a huge yard sale this weekend to get rid of the junk.
  • How To (Mentally) Max Out Your 401K: Carrie says, ”Unfortunately, many people who CAN max out their 401K DON’T. Here’s a helpful list of items that can get you in the mental mindset to max out that 401K.” Great topic, and one I learned a lot from!
  • Earning Interest and Dividends on Someone Else’s Dime: Amanda shares how to earn interest on found money.
  • 5 Steps to Closing Old Bank Accounts, Kevin says, “We recently switched bank accounts. There is more involved to it than you think — a helpful list so you won’t forget any of the steps (and get hit with fees).” Bookmarking this in case we ever need to make a switch.
  • Holiday Tipping Guide: Jim shares his holiday tipping guide. Some of the numbers don’t apply to me, or seem a bit high, what do you tip?

Whatchamacallit/Other

Of course I’d title this after one of the best named candy bars ever! These articles don’t fit in any of the above categories, but are still great reads.

What a fun carnival! Thanks so much for hosting!

By the way, I used to gag on those chocolate coins until somebody finally told me that they're easier to eat – and taste better – if you remove the foil first. ;-)
