Holiday Shopping Guide: Onionhead A-Z magnet set review

I received these funny onionhead magnets for review from Momfluence. When I opened the packet I laughed. I would never think of pairing onions with feelings, but that’s just what Onionhead did. The drawings are meant to convey various feelings and the set includes several “I Feel” and “I Want to Feel” magnets. The idea is to teach children to talk about their feelings, and share what they are feeling with you.

I love the concept, but we found that the feelings were often difficult for the kids to understand. Zestful was one I had trouble defining to the kids. I also found the kids would pile on the happy feelings and avoided using ones such as “Insensitive”, “Mean”, and “Stubborn.”

Overall I thought it was a good tool for getting the kids to talk about their feelings, even if they couldn’t define what they really felt. It was especially helpful in talking to my oldest son, who has Asperger’s Syndrome and often says he doesn’t know what he’s feeling.

The drawings are cute, but tough for the non-readers in the house to puzzle out. If you have kids that aren’t reading you might consider putting away some of the more complex feelings until they are a bit older. My 5 year old couldn’t tell the difference between “Disappointed” and “Ungrateful”.

At $20 for the set, I would recommend this for a classroom, therapist, or for kids that have trouble expressing their feelings. It might also make a nice stocking stuffer for the right person.

FTC mumbo jumbo: I received the set prior to doing this review, and will be donating it to one of my children’s schools.
