Los Angeles Part One: Earthquakes, Hollywood, and the Getty Museum

April 5, 2010 By Kelly 2 Comments

As you may know I’m in Los Angeles as part of the Childhood Hunger Ends Here Campaign. I added on a few days at the beginning of my trip to see the sights of LA and the surrounding area. I’ve never been to LA, so I wanted to take full advantage of the trip.

I’m staying at the lovely Sheraton Universal. Though my connecting room is a bit noisy, it is otherwise gorgeous. I wish I could take the desk chair home with me.

I rented a car so I was abel to drive around and see the sites. I drove through Beverly Hills, over to Santa Monica, and through much of downtown Los Angeles before heading to Hollywood. I opted not to stop and walk the Hollywood walk of fame since it was unbelievably packed, and both odd, touristy, and run down all along the same block.

I did however drive up to the Hollywood sign and took a few photos. I couldn’t bring myself to walk out far enough onto the narrow paths to take a better photo.

You may have heard news yesterday that there was an Earthquake in Mexicali. The earthquake was most severe in Mexicali, but was felt as far as Arizona. In Los Angeles we felt the quake, and I was completely surprised by it. I have never felt an earthquake before. I at first thought I was feeling dizzy, or nauseous, but then the hangers in my closet started banging into the wall, and I knew what it was. My training and knowledge about what to do comes mainly from watching TV and movies oddly enough. I took cover in the doorway and it was over.

As soon as it was over I checked in with my husband, and then checked out twitter. (what it’s kind of my job!) Then I hightailed it out of the hotel. I couldn’t stand the feeling of being inside anymore.

I headed to the Getty Center to see what I’d been told was amazing. Words barely do it justice. It is gorgeous in every aspect, awe inspiring, and had the best views of Los Angeles I have seen.
