Broken Toe Update: Getting Personal

April 6, 2015 By Kelly Leave a Comment

As I’ve shared previously I broke my little toe on my left foot. I hit it on the molding between our kitchen and front hall while hopping over the baby gate we use to keep the puppy away from the front door. I don’t even know how I did it-just that it hurt like h-e-double hockey sticks.

Despite resting and ice that weekend it wasn’t getting better, so I went to our local Urgent Care (oddly enough it’s in the local mall), and they confirmed it was broken, and referred me to an orthopedic doctor due to the severity of my fractures. My toe was broken in two places-I still don’t know how that happened! It’s pretty silly to think a small toe can cause so many issues, but it did. I ended up mostly immobile for weeks (between the swelling, pain, and a horrible flu).

Boot for broken toe

My fancy boot for date night this past weekend

Thankfully, I had good news two weeks ago that it was doing well. While I ramped up my activity a bit I still get a lot of aching and pain. Mostly if I drive for awhile or have to stand on my feet for awhile. It’s been a bit frustrating to try to ramp up but not be able to do everything I normally can and want to.

Thankfully at today’s checkup I got word that I can move on from my boot this week and transition into a shoe! A real shoe! I put two shoes on for the first time in 6 weeks today and it felt WEIRD. It was a bit painful, too.

While I make the transition this week I’ll be wearing the boot when I go out (it makes the reason for my weird gait a bit more obvious), and shoes at home. I’m not supposed to walk barefoot, though I find that it actually helps, so I take my shoes off (and leave socks on) around the house in the evening when I’m not as active.

I’m still on orders to not put any rolling weight on it-that means no strenuous walks, no running, and no high impact exercise. I think I can handle doing some bodyweight exercises, stretching, and brief walks (while I limp along). I’m taking it easy so I can keep moving forward though-I don’t want any setbacks!

I should be in the clear in about a month. I’m incredibly grateful that I got off pretty easily, and my doctor said I’m a pro at healing. I’m apparently a gifted toe mender-I’m about 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the curve.

Here’s hoping that my progress continues and I’m back to a regular routine soon! Thanks for following along with my personal posts, even with my whining about my toes! 😉
