This is part two in a series about saving money on baby essentials. Today we’re going to tackle how to save the most on baby gear. Part One of our series is all about 15 Baby Essentials where I share what all those must-haves for baby.

  • Part 1 is 15 Essential Baby Items
  • Part 2 is 5 Ways To Save The Most On Baby Gear
  • Part 3 is 29 Ways To Prepare Financially For Baby

We know raising a baby can be expensive, after all we raised 4 of them! We also know most Centsible readers are looking for unique ideas to spend less and save more. Whether you are expecting or you’re shopping for someone who is we’re thrilled to partner with Chicco to share great money-saving ideas for parents.

Chicco offers great baby products that are high-quality without the expensive price tag. They also have a great deal going on now (details at the bottom of the post) and are offering free shipping on baby gear!

5 Ways To Save The Most On Baby Gear

1. Shop Sales

With my list of essentials on hand you can start shopping early and find sales for all the baby essentials you need. Start by familiarizing yourself with your local baby store or the aisles of your local big box store. Do some window shopping online. It will give you a sense of regular prices and allow you to find good deals. (and keep scrolling to get to a great deal from Chicco!)

2. Create A Registry

The old school way of thinking is that baby registries are just for your first-born and after that you won’t need much. However, more and more families are throwing baby showers or ‘sprinkles’ for second, third, and more babies in a family.

Sometimes this is because of the length of time between babies, divorce and then remarriage, or adoption. Sometimes it’s just nice to shower a family you love with a few ‘welcome to the world’ gifts and a gathering of loved ones. Whatever the reason, families often appreciate when loved ones can gather together and share their excitement for their impending arrival.

Creating a registry of items you need or a wish list is a great way to get exactly what you need for baby whether it’s your 1st or 4th.

3. Look For High-Quality

Quality matters when it comes to products in general and is essential when it comes to baby products. You want something that will stand up to time, spit up, and blowouts! You also want to find affordable and well-made products that you know will be safe. Not only does it give you peace of mind as a new parent, but it also means you can reuse them (or donate, consign, or sell them) down the road.

4. Trade In

It’s likely you’ll get a ton of gifts when your baby arrives, but you may not need what you receive. While it’s certainly a great idea to send a thank you note, you shouldn’t feel guilty about trading in duplicates or extras for essentials you can use. You may turn those 50 onesies in newborn size into onesies that will last all of baby’s first year in a variety of sizes.

You can also ‘trade in’ by consigning items when you’re done with them. Often local consignment shops will take your gently used baby gear and clothing and give you credit to use in the store. You can use that to trade in an item you no longer need (like the baby swing your infant hates) and pick up something else instead (like a new baby carrier).

5. Wait

One of the best suggestions I offer new parents is to wait. While it’s exciting to get baby’s nursery ready and make sure you have everything you need, you may find that a lot of ‘must-haves’ other parents recommend or someone purchases for you aren’t on your must-have list.

There’s no reason to buy all.the.things. Instead focus on essentials and take a wait and see approach about items you’re not certain about. You can always purchase pacifiers later or pick up a wipe warmer if your baby hates cold wipes at changing time.
