It’s November, and even though we have super warm weather the next few days, winter weather is just around the corner. Two weekends ago I pulled out all the flannel sheets, sweaters, coats, mittens, and other winter gear I had stored away from last year. Changing over seasonal clothing is actually a favorite activity of mine (I know I’m weird) since I get to purge all the stuff that doesn’t fit from the warmer months and figure out what goes and what stays from what I stored away last year. Generally this means pants that the kids have outgrown, the snowboots no one fits into anymore, and anything that’s not going to make it another season.
I immediately squared away the kids since we had some colder weeks in October. Despite my protests that they should stop growing the kids needed new pants. Once I got that squared away I went through winter gear like mittens and coats. Thankfully Land’s End makes these amazing coats (Squall coats) that grow with kids (and I buy them a bit big) so the younger kids all have at least another year or two with their current winter coats. You can often find them in their Overstock section or look for sales and score 30-70% off their retail price (which isn’t bad to begin with!)

My husband was good as well having a variety of coats that work well for him. That left my oldest (15) and me.
I have two dressy coats, both mid-length and wool. One is a saturated but soft blue coat that I bought from J. Crew over a decade ago. It’s classic and not too dressy so I can wear it for a variety of occasions. It’s similar in style to the one pictured below (and no I didn’t pay over $300 for it even back then!)
The other is a textured deep brown coat with a ‘leather-like’ collar and a belted waist. Again, it’s great with jeans or a dress, but neither of these qualify as everyday wear. I need something that’s washable, is a parka-because I’m tall-ish this helps cover me better, and of course comfortable. All that while dressed up in a package that’s cute is a pretty tall order.
I had a down parka from Land’s End that has been my go to for the last two years. I stored it away at the end of last year, but when I pulled it out this year it was a bit stinky so I washed it. And of course I accidentally shrunk when I washed it. Not only was it a bit tight, but the sleeves were too short too. Now Emma is the owner of a too big parka (that she loves) and I’m back to the drawing board.
Additionally I need to find a PLAIN coat for my growing teen who is in that tough stage between kid sizes and adult sizes. While he will loathe it this will require some shopping, but I’m confident we can find him something that works at Sears’s Land’s End store. Of course I’ll check on my phone to see if I can find the same thing online for less. Additionally if they don’t have the right color/style/size combo in store we can always order online while in the store and get free shipping. It’s a great way to avoid shipping costs.
But, back to me. 🙂
I have in mind a few coats, but I’d love some input. Which do you like?
I like the faux fur, the length looks right, and the fit could work.
This is utilitarian, but works for what I need it for. I would choose a different color than the bone color that’s pictured here. Maybe burgundy?
I actually prefer a bright coat since most of my pants are jeans or dark colors. It’s a nice punch of color in the winter, and this brings it!
Tell me which one you like best. I’m open to color options too, but as I said I prefer something a little brighter/different since it seems 99% of winter coats are black or brown (and I don’t ‘do’ white).
