Labor Day is this weekend and it’s a great time to say goodbye to summer with a good old fashioned cookout with friends and family. We love Labor Day weekend since it gives us a chance to soak up one last weekend of fun in the sun and we gorge on all our summertime favorites that will soon be replaced with apples, pumpkins, and the cool crisp fall air.
Creating a Labor Day menu shouldn’t be too hard or time-consuming. After all it’s about spending time together not standing over the stove all weekend.
Since many folks deal with food allergies or preferences now it’s best to get an idea of what allergies or preferences your guests may have ahead of time. In some cases if your guests have extensive food allergies or some that are more unusual they may tell you ‘not to worry about them,’ I have even said those words myself! But as a good host or hostess you can easily make a menu that’s not only allergy-free but tasty, too!
I partnered with ACME to share this post so if you’re headed out to do your Labor Day shopping consider shopping with ACME. We’ve found that not only does their app help us save big bucks, but they have some of the freshest produce you can find from local growers. It’s where we’ll be getting all our veggies for our holiday cookout.
Gluten Free Labor Day Menu
Grilling is easy, cleanup is a breeze, and everyone loves grilled food!
Go traditional with burgers and hot dogs: you can get gluten-free buns (available in the gluten-free section). Grill onions to top your burgers and make sure to toast the buns on the grill, too. I love to put out a variety of toppings-mustards, relish, ketchup, mayo, and whatever else anyone might want.
Make pizzas on the grill! It’s a fun way to do something a bit different than traditional Labor Day menus.
- Buy pre-made dough (or make your own using our family recipe) and/or buy gluten-free crusts.
- Put together a variety of toppings like fresh local sweet peppers, caramelized onions, different types of cheese (or dairy-free Daiya ‘cheese’), ground beef, sausage, and more.
- Decide on DIY pizzas (everyone makes their own) or make up a variety of pizzas for everyone to try like my avocado nacho pizza or Stephanie’s bacon apple gorgonzola pizza.
Grill up veggies. Grilling veggies gives them amazing flavor. You can start with a simple marinade (check labels for any allergens) or dressing, but I honestly love them with just a little bit of salt, pepper, and olive oil. Make them into kabobs for even more fun. And don’t forget the corn on the cob! Corn on the grill is simply amazing.
Finger Food Fun:
Instead of a big meal that needs to be served all at once consider finger foods. It’s a great way to feed everyone all day long especially if you’ll have friends or family members arriving at different times.
Honey barbecue chicken wings are a fun finger food, and you can make them ahead of time. They’re just as good cold!
Fresh fruit like watermelon is always a hit. Consider adding in some other summer fruits like honeydew, cantaloupe, and fresh berries and make fruit kabobs! A side of yogurt to dip in or sprinkles for the kids means these won’t last long!
Fresh veggies are something we can’t get enough of at this time of year! Serve up sliced peppers, cucumbers, and more with a side of hummus to dip.
Homemade guacamole and homemade salsa are another finger food favorite. Just add some tortilla chips and you have the perfect party food.
Create some delicious drinks for your guests to go alongside your meal. While it’s nice to have plenty of water on hand for those last summer days you can make simple drinks that everyone is sure to love.
Try this simple homemade strawberry lemonade for a great treat.
For a refreshing alcoholic drink you can try this watermelon sangria recipe or make it your own by subbing in some other fresh summer fruit.
What do you plan to serve this Labor Day weekend?
