With hardwood floors throughout our home I’m always on the lookout for rugs. I know most people buy things pretty easily, but I take a long time to find what I want at a good price. I’m on the lookout for rugs for two of our four bedrooms at the moment, but I’m especially focused on the bedroom our boys share. My boys share the larger bedroom of the kid bedrooms. It works out well for them (and us) despite their 8 year age difference.
Since they’ve been sharing a room we’ve literally done nothing to the space because we knew some major renovation needed to happen. I feel incredibly guilty that they don’t have more of a pulled together space, but we’re working to remedy that right now. It starts with some demo work and a major overhaul of their walls because they are getting a new window (to replace one that not working properly), we’re going to fix the horrible texture on their walls (most likely by skim coating), add new moldings, and freshen up the whole room.
Once the renovation work is done we will be pulling together some fun decor that is suitable for both of them. A little mature, a little geeky, and plenty of play and lounging space.
Since we’re waiting on our windows to be installed we’re at a standstill for now, but I’m not wasting any time and I’m planning out the space and decor. It’s way more fun than thinking about all the labor we need to do anyway.
When it comes to putting together a room I think the best bet is to focus on pulling the room together with one big statement piece. In this case we’re focusing on the rug. As soon as I saw this ‘block’ rug I knew it would be a perfect centerpiece for their room.
We’re going with a Minecraft/Terraria/pixel theme for the room. Both boys love video games, and my oldest has plans to be a game designer.
Minecraft Themed Kid Bedroom
With the big statement picked out and a simple wall color (I’m leaning towards a blue that matches the bedding) we need to fill out the rest of the room. N
Lamps: Task lighting is important in a child’s bedroom. In our house Minecraft means building so what better thing to fill a lamp with than LEGOs? In lieu of the comic book shade I am going to print out some Minecraft backgrounds and photos I have (on printer paper) to update this LEGO lamp idea into a DIY Minecraft lamp! (Find a fillable lamp at Wayfair here)
Art: While there are plenty of posters available I plan to use photos of the kids’ Minecraft creations blown up as engineer prints. (You can find them at Staples here)
Bedding: Wayfair has the PERFECT Minecraft bedding with this pixel bedding set. It’s a little more mature so it suits a 16 year old just as well as the 8 year old.
Seating: The kids definitely need space to lounge and these beanbag chairs fit the bill and my budget. I think the ‘Spicy Lime’ color will go really well with the rug and the Minecraft theme.
Though the pixel seating is tempting-the price is not within my budget for this room.
Minecraft Decor: We definitely need a few torches for bedside reading and some ore just for fun.
Disclosure: Wayfair provided me with a gift card in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.
