Pinky Toe Problems

February 25, 2015 By Kelly

I try to occasionally share personal updates on the blog, but I find more and more often those are going on Facebook, on Instagram, or even (shocking!) on Twitter. There are a few personal updates I want to share that are longer in nature, and even though promised in 2015 I’d be more personal on the blog, and so far have only done one personal post (On 2015)! That changes now. 🙂

I was always so amazed by the fact that as a kid despite eating 6 million metric tons of sugar I never had a cavity or that despite my rather active nature as a kid I never broke a bone. Those things changed as an adult, though. I have had several cavities since having kids and I’ve broken my pinky toe on more than one occasion.

I know what you’re thinking-does that even count? I thought it didn’t either. Saturday taught me a big lesson in how important your pinky toe is, though. I smacked my foot as I was hopping over the baby gate that separates our front hall/front door and the kitchen. We have gates in place because our dog is a little rambunctious when people come to the door.

I don’t know what I did exactly, but I hit it-what felt like a giant toe stub-on the top of the wooden gate and the it bounced off and hit the molding of the entryway when I was hopping over it. It’s pretty low, so it’s not like I was doing a high jump-it’s a move we all do a million times a day.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a bit overdramatic when I have a run of the mill cold or flu. I am not a good sick person at all. But pain? I can handle in higher doses than most people I believe. See also: 4 unmedicated births. As soon as I hit it I knew it wasn’t just a stub. It was too painful. Despite icing and resting it it still hurt. I was hobbled around the house the rest of Saturday hoping I’d wake up and it would be okay.

Instead I woke up the next morning and it hurt worse. Then I looked at my foot. It looked like someone had punched it. It was black and blue and swollen. I’ll spare you the photos.

I couldn’t get to the Urgent Care on Sunday, so I went in on Monday where an x-ray confirmed it was broken in one spot rather cleanly (that would mean just waiting for it to heal) and a comminuted fracture in another spot (meaning splintering which is harder to heal). I got a fancy boot to wear on my foot, my foot taped up, and orders to see an orthopedic doctor because of the comminuted fracture. I have an appointment on Thursday.

For now I’m pretty immobile, and when I am up I have to hobble so I don’t put weight on my foot. It’s sounds like it would be nice to rest and keep your feet up all day, but it’s not as fun as it sounds. Especially not for the family who have to pick up all my slack.

It seems silly-it’s only a pinky toe, after all! Who knew they were so important?
