Tomorrow morning bright and early I’m headed to San Francisco for a short of mother/daughter getaway. My husband will be along for work though so we get some great one-on-one time with our nine year old.
It will be her first time on a plane (plane tickets aren’t exactly budget friendly you know!) and our first time alone for more than an hour or so in well, a long, long time. We did something similar for my now 13 year old, so we are planning to make this a tradition in our family. Each kiddo will get a getaway with one or both parents for a week around age 8 or 9. The little dude can hardly wait.
The plan is to use a CityPass to get into some major attractions (including Alcatraz Island), and take it from there. We may plan a day trip to Muir Woods since it’s such a magical place.
I also plan to eat my way around the city with her at some budget friendly restaurants. She’s my little foodie, so we’re excited to try some of the amazing cuisine San Francisco has to offer.
Mostly I’m excited to see her impression of my favorite place to visit, and just be.
Have a recommendation for something we should do, see, experience or dine at while in San Francisco- let me know in the comments!

I highly recommend getting the narrated self-guided tours at Alcatraz. It brings what you’re seeing to life.
Of course, you’ll have to take a cable car ride. Beth has great recommendations. No matter what you do, you can’t help but fall in love with the city.

Some suggestions:
1. Take your foodie daughter to the Ferry Marketplace. They have a great farmer’s market on Saturdays (which you will miss with travel) and possibly one more day. Lots of centsible free samples and great food/fun people scene. If you can’t get there on a market day, it is still fun to wander aound inside-great Asian Fusion food at The Slanted Door. Good Burgers at Taylor’s Refersher in the Market. but it may be more fun to take your daughter to In and Out Burger, a California instituion which has lower prices.
2. Also take her to Chinatown-great food here: http://www.rnglounge.com/ and you can take a 5 minute tour of the fortune cookie factory.
3. Sign up for Goldstar.com-kind of like Groupon for tickets and events-we got $10 tickets to a Giants baseball game with fireworks (of course, this was the year before they won the World Series).
4. The SF library has free walking tours which are great-not sure if they have any geared to kids, but here they are: http://www.sfcityguides.org/
Enjoy-I love San Francisco!!!
