squeaky wheel: Lego edition

January 27, 2009 By Kelly 4 Comments

How much time would you offer if someone would give you $40-$50?
I spent 3 minutes on a well crafted email to on of our favorite toy companies, Lego, and received 2 tee shirts, and 2 registrations to a Lego Club Event at our local store. I value it at about $40.
Totally worth it! Especially because it renewed my faith in a brand that has long been a major part of our lives.

The situation was simple. We wanted our 2 oldest children to attend a Lego Club Event at our local (King of Prussia Mall) store. I inquired about the details while we were in the Lego store on my youngest child’s birthday. I was given additional info, but no one mentioned registering. The day before the club event I called the store to verify the time, and was told a certain Lego store employee was running the show and to call back that afternoon. So, I called the store again and was told that the registration was full. When I explained how there had been 2 opportunities for the store employees to tell me that, the person on the other end of the phone was rather unsympathetic. I asked him to please explain to the other employees in the store what the policies and procedures surrounding the club were, and he replied that he couldn’t since he didn’t know who I spoke with. Niiiice.

I don’t need to shop in their store, there are DOZENS of stores that carry Lego, lots of them closer to home, but we continue to go to that particular store on special occasions. My kids like Legos. We like their brand. My oldest has quite the collection, and it is one of the few ways he relates well to other kids. (he has Asperger’s Syndrome) If I had to rename my oldest I would name him Zack.

Thankfully the kids did not seem too upset by what happened, but it still bothered me. So I sent an email, and today got a call and email in response apologizing for our experience, and offering free registration to February’s club event as well as 2 free shirts from January’s event.

While I didn’t do it for the free stuff, it doesn’t hurt. 😉

Miranda, they really are a great company. My oldest now says he wants to be a “set designer” for Lego. That would be a cool job!

If you didn’t see it check out my post on our super successful Lego party: http://www.thecentsiblelife.com/?p=37

That is excellent, I wish all companies would take customer service so seriously. We buy a lot of legos ourselves, and will continue to do so after reading this!!
