With Valentine’s Day just around the corner it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to treat your sweetie. While you want the best for your Valentine, you also don’t want to overspend on this special day. If she’s anything like me, gifts are only made sweeter by the savings!
One easy way to save big is to use your credit card to rack up rewards while buying your sweetheart chocolates, flowers, and gifts galore. Below you’ll find a few other ways you can save big this Valentine’s Day.
Sweet Savings Tips for Valentine’s Day
Budget, budget, budget.
Do I sound like a broken record? It’s with good reason! I always recommend starting with your budget so you can stretch your dollar further. Set a limit on what you’re going to spend and create a list of gift ideas and recipients (don’t want to leave out your kids or your “office wife”).
While you may like to avoid promotional emails, many retailers offer up special savings for new or continued subscribers. You may get 25% off for signing up or find a special deal in your inbox that’s exclusive to email subscribers.
Celebrate on February 15th
While it may be nice to give your sweetheart the full treatment (flowers, chocolates, gifts, and dinner) on Valentine’s Day, if you celebrate on the 15th (a Saturday) you’ll be able to get the same meal for half the cost, and you can score fresh flowers and more at 50% or more off! While it may be a bit unconventional, you can make it even more special (hint: more chocolate) without spending as much.
Redeem your credit card rewards.
If you use your credit card for purchases throughout the year you can rack up big savings. Maybe you were savvy enough to build up some rewards through holiday shopping. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of those cash back rewards for gifts, gift cards (not necessarily just to give – but to buy something special!), and you can even find exclusive deals that could stretch those rewards even further!
Discover cardmembers can redeem their accumulated Cashback Bonus for partner gift cards to more than 150 retailers. Simply log into your online Account Center or Discover Mobile app, click “Redeem” and select a partner gift card, all of which come with added value such as $20 in exchange for getting a $25 gift card.

Make date night affordable.
Dinner at a nice restaurant can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. I shared some tips for saving on dining out recently, and in addition you can earn cash back on your fancy meal.
Now through March 31, Discover cardmembers can sign up to earn 5% Cashback Bonus on up to $1,500 in restaurant and movie purchases. If your bill for dinner is $100, you’ll earn $5 cash back.
