I don’t know what came over me this week. I think I’m just tired of looking at our house and imagining things looking nicer someday. Since someday usually involves boatloads of cash, and our priority is to get out of debt someday starts feeling a looooong way away.
Maybe it’s stir craziness from being stuck inside so much (snow, ice, sick kids, a broken windshield), but I just had to start on the the first project on our long list. Our family room is a step down family room from the kitchen. It’s an open floor plan, which I love, but it has paneling OVER paneling, dark beams on the ceiling, very little natural light, and a huge wall of brick. Oh, and I forgot to mention the very DIY (but not in a good way) built-ins, and the maroon rug.
Basically the room was carefully decorated to be a super dark cave. When we first moved in there was a line of trees against the side of the house that had to come down for safety anyway. Once we removed them there was suddenly some light. That made the 2 skylights actually allow light in!
The only real project we have done is to close up the skylight that we had that was leaking (at the expense of the previous owner). Since then it’s been the kids’ playroom, and while it’s something we look at a lot, we kind of ignore it.
Well, no more.
I spent Thursday evening pulling down the built ins.
You can see the lovely many colors of paint/stain on the paneling. I tried to figure out which color came first to no avail. I think there was the original color and at least 5 other colors used sometime.
I kind of like the whitewashed paneling. Too bad it was painted over in white (like the rest of our house).
Under the built-ins we found the original flooring. Hideous tile that is cracking in spots. We have plans to recarpet, but for now a cover, removing the broken bits, and covering the space with the kids’ desk is good enough.
While knocking down one of the shelves I found an old postcard. Half of it was blank probably from water or age, but the other half was intact. Since there was only one owner (a family with 4 kids!) for our home I’m fairly sure this is a letter from the parents to the kids, or a relative to the family. Whoever it was, they took a trip on Lufthansa Airlines (see the plane on the front). Most of the postcard was about sites they saw-yawn. But this little postscript had me giggling….
Have you ever found any treasures/trash when you were remodeling or looking around your home?
I’ll keep you updated as we work on the room on a budget. It needs a major overhaul, but we’re managing a bit at a time to make it manageable for us, and affordable. Next up-patching, sanding and patching and sanding some more. Fun times!
