Weekend Ideas for Summer’s End

August 30, 2016 By Kelly

Sponsored post disclosureThe end of summer is in sight and families are trying to squeeze in as many activities as they can before school begins or maybe even considering a fall getaway. Now is the perfect time to plan one last hurrah or a break after school starts to keep the summer fun going.

When planning a getaway for a day or weekend, it’s best to consider locations that are close by so you don’t waste precious family time on travel. Instead, follow our advice for having a great time with your family (while keeping your budget in check).

Try a new hobby:

Since moving to Minnesota we’ve tried a ton of new outdoor sports, past times, and hobbies that we overlooked or ignored in our previous area. Try something new like geocaching, kayaking, a bike tour of a local city, or even a class at your local parks and rec department (ours offers everything from fishing to yoga).

Explore local or national parks:

Parks are a wonderful way to spend the last bit of your summer. Whether you make a list of local parks to explore, head out for a hike, or take a trip to a National Park, you are sure to enjoy the great outdoors during this great time of year.

Tour local museums:

Local museums are great for families of all ages from grandma to the baby. Make a day of it by exploring museums in your area that you’ve never been to before or hit old favorites. If you have annual passes, take full advantage of them or look for reciprocal membership advantages where you can get into another museum for free (think of it as a museum partnership). Don’t forget to scope out free events your local museum may offer or look for free or discounted days you can visit.

Visit an amusement park:

Amusement parks are full of thrills! Whether you spend the day cooling off at a water park or visit a little kid-friendly park, you are sure to find something to fit families of all ages. If there are no local amusement parks, check out local fairs for some of the same summer fun.

Enjoy a sporting event:

Whether you want to take them out to the ballgame, catch a pre-season football game, or participate in a local walk or race there are tons of ways to get your sports on at the end of summer. Don’t forget to check for minor league or training camps in your area for all the fun without the hefty price tag.

Remember to reward yourself!

Reward yourself for your family fun by using a credit card that can take you places. With the Discover it Miles card, families can earn 1.5x Miles for every dollar spent to put toward a future family vacation.

Plus, with Discover’s Cashback Match® promotion, Discover will automatically match all of the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year as a cardmember!

How are you planning to close out your summer? Or are you planning a fall getaway?
