Back to School Savings with Discover and a $50 Giveaway

Whether your kids are back to school already or headed there soon I’ve got all the savings tips you need for this year (and next!) with a little help from Discover.

5 Tips for Big Back to School Savings

1. Shop Ahead For Next Year

At the end of the back to school season stores are eager to make way for fall items like Halloween costumes so you can find deep discounts on school supplies.

You know your kids will need new crayons or more #2 pencils next year, so stock up when local stores offer up clearance deals. You can score 50-90% off on back to school staples. (including actual staples)

Consider purchasing some extra supplies for your child’s classroom.

Pro Tip: Additionally, you will find items like back to school packs of snacks and things like antibacterial wipes at a steep discount when they’re in the back to school section.

2. Use Your Credit Card’s Rewards

Using your credit card’s cash rewards to shop is like not even having to use your own hard-earned dollars for your regular shopping.

You can cash your rewards in for gift cards or use your Cashback Bonus at Amazon.com when you check out as a Discover cardmember.

Bonus? Amazon has a great back to school department with easy-to-navigate categories.

Pro Tip for Cardmembers: In your Amazon.com account, link your Discover card to your account through the Shop With Points page in order to redeem it during checkout.

3. Buy Online and Earn

Shopping online for back to school is the smart way to get it all done without the hassle. You can use your Discover card online to save big with one stop shopping and earn a bonus, too. Even better, there’s no battling through the crowds in the back to school aisle.

Discover cardmembers get extra bonuses at these online retailers:

  • Wal-Mart: 5% Cashback Bonus
  • Target: 5% Cashback Bonus
  • Kmart: 10% Cashback Bonus

Pro Tip for Cardmembers: Log into Discover.com and visit ShopDiscover or the new Discover Deals site to access the retailers above!

4. Buy This Season’s Clothes on Clearance

It’s tempting to outfit your kids in brand new back to school clothes before summer is over, but in most cases the cooler weather doesn’t hit until mid to late September. That means you have plenty of time to shop around for fall or winter clothes.

By timing your shopping and keeping an eye on sales for your favorite stores you can save big on the clothes they need now.

You can also shop ahead for next year by getting a size up.

Pro Tip: Use your credit card when shopping to accumulate bonus rewards.

5. Score Free Shipping

Buying online is easier and oftentimes cheaper. You can save even more with free shipping offers when you add enough items to your cart.

This year, Discover cardmembers can shop online to take advantage of free shipping and earn extra Cashback Bonus on clothing at these stores:

  • Aeropostale: Get free shipping on over $50 after signing up for Aeropostale’s email, and earn 5% Cashback Bonus by using ShopDiscover.com
  • OnlineShoes: Enjoy free shipping on UGG Australia purchases, and earn 15% Cashback Bonus by using ShopDiscover.com
  • JCPenney: Take advantage of free shipping on orders over $99 (or over $25 when shipping to a store instead of your home address) and earn 10% Cashback Bonus by using ShopDiscover.com

Pro Tip: Look for other great offers on ShopDiscover and learn how you can get a Discover card at Discover.com.

Dollar stores are great for school supplies. As for clothing I save a couple of outfits from previous sales that I save that will get us through the first couple of weeks mixed with old clothes, then after the school year begins and the clothes are on real clearance we stock up.
