Summer Family Fun: Family Summer Movies for Free or Cheap

June 18, 2014 By Kelly 7 Comments

Summertime is a time when we strive to spend most of our time being active, but there are times when a break from the heat is just what we need. On rainy days or to beat the heat there’s nothing better than cooling off with a family movie. I’ll share where you can watch movies for free or cheap this summer, and it’s also the perfect summer family fun idea to kick off our Summer Family Fun link party.

Family Summer Movies for Free or Cheap

Family Summer Movies free or cheap

Cheap Movies in the Theatre

A little AC and a dark theatre can be a welcome respite during the midday heat or perfect for a rainy day.

Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse

Cinemark Summer movies
Purchase tickets for all 10 films for $5, or $1 at the box office. Movies and days vary by location.

Regal Summer Movie Express

Regal Summer Movie Express
Regal offers $1 films on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am. Arrive early as seats are limited.

Classic Cinemas
$1 Wednesdays showing PG or G rated films in June through August.

Harkins Summer Movie Fun

Harkins is offering a great deal-$5 for 10 movies. Less than $1 per movie. All movies start at 9:45 am and seats are able to be reserved.

Malco Kid’s Summer Film Fest
Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am. Arrive early. $2 tickets June through August.

Marquee Cinemas
At select locations you’ll find FREE movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:30am. Limited seating and no reservations-so arrive early.

Carmike Theatres
Click the link and head to Kid Series, and then you can choose from the dropdown menu based on state and then city. Offerings vary as does time of day and the day of the week. $4 includes admission, a small drink, and popcorn.

Cheap Movies at Home

Netflix
Netflix is our go-to for movies and TV shows from new movies to classic TV shows or documentaries to edutainment like the Mythbusters. A subscription will cost you $8.99/month as a new member, but you get a free trial to see if it’s worth the cost to you.

Library Rentals
You can get DVDs at the library to watch both classics and the latest. Our local library charges a small fee for rentals, but they have a great stock so it’s often worth the cost for something you know you’ll only watch once.

On Demand/iTunes Sales
If you have cable or use iTunes to rent movies keep an eye out for sales and pick up a rental or two for less. You have a set period of time from when you rent the movie  to watch it (usually 30 days), and a set time period you can pause the viewing (24 hours is typical).

Amazon Prime is another way to get free movies, especially for kids.

BTW – love the piggy with the 3-D glasses!

Thanks! I know we’ll have at least a few days where we’ll need this list for sure this summer so I was happy to share it. 🙂

Great list, Kelly! I may need some of these today – our first nearly 100-degree day of the summer. We’ll be looking for some AC by this afternoon, I bet!
